“THE TARTAN EMBLEM OF QUEENSLAND”

The background of the Champion of Champions Championship of Australia 2010 website is the Queensland Tartan. The Queensland Tartan has also been used in the logo thongs.

Background

The Queensland Tartan was initially designed by Mr Jack Allen of Bundaberg in 1995, it was a tartan of seven basic colours to depict the state of Queensland in winter, the bright sunshine state. Mr Allen, before he died in May 1997, requested the assistance of The Society of St. Andrew of Scotland, Bundaberg branch and The Scottish Clans Congress of Queensland to assist in the promotion of this special Queensland Tartan.

Over the years after presentation to two governments with no success, Mr John Agnew the president of the Scottish Clans Congress decided to press on personally with the project. Although all Scottish Societies, bands and individuals who were canvassed agreed with concept of the Queensland Tartan and Jack Allen’s design, they all agreed that it was a bright tartan. Following this the tartan was retained as the Dress tartan, the colours were then muted slightly to design the Hunting and Muted Queensland Tartans.

With these three tartans, Mr Agnew proceeded to have them registered and accredited, as they had previously been noted, by the Tartan Society of Scotland, this was completed in October 1999. It was not directly issued as it had not as yet been given government approval and then in May 2000 the Premier of Queensland Mr Peter Beattie gave his approval to the Tartan Society and the registration was granted. We had at last the official “Tartan Emblem of Queensland”.

Following discussions with an intellectual property solicitor, Jack Allen’s beneficiaries, Queensland Scottish retailers and Scottish Weavers we proceeded and now are able to present the Queensland Tartan a state tartan, for all to wear with pride. The copyright and trademark are the property of Mr. John R. Agnew Esq.

As the sunshine state, Queensland’s lifestyle is bright and colourful as is the tartan.

The tartan consists of three tones or shades:

Dress, which is the brightest,
Hunting is medium and
Muted is the quietest of the three.

The seven colours in the Queensland Tartan representing Queensland in winter are.....

White for the sparse cloud in winter.
Blue for the waters of the Barrier Reef and Coral sea.
Azure for the Queensland Blue skies.
Green for the Tropical Rain Forests and Fields.
Yellow for the Tropical Beaches.
Lilac for the Sugar Cane Flower.
Crimson for the Floral Emblem of Queensland the Cooktown Orchid.

SQRCHDI wish to thank Mr John Agnew for granting us permission to use the Queensland Tartan in our promotion of these championships and supporting competitions.
